Ang Bayan Ng Shuniah

Ang bayan ng Shuniah ay nasa dako ng malinis na baybayin ng Lake Superior, na nasa silangan lang ng Lungsod ng Thunder Bay. Ang Shuniah ay isang napakalaking lawak ng kaparangan sa Canada, at namumutiktik ng mga ilog at lawa, na tumatatak sa Shuniah na isang bantayug na bayan ng Canada.  Sa tahimik at mapayapang bayang ito, ang aming mga mamamayan ay nakakapagtamasa ng mga tinatag na sari-saring palatuntunang libangan para sa mga bata, mayor de edad at nakatatanda, kabilang na dito ang mga sumusunod:

  • Mga liwasang bayan para kamping, paglaruan, para palakasan at paligsahan at languyan.
  • “Golf”
  • “Tennis”
  • “Skiing” ( ang ‘ski’ay isang kagamitan na ginawa para sa taong gumagamit nito upang siya ay  makapag-dausdos sa niyebe) na palusong at pang-ibayong  bayan

  • Mga tindahan ng mga regalo at bagay na gawang-sining
  • Mga tindahang sari-sari

Ang Lawang Superior ay nagbibigay, na walang katulad, sa mga mamamayan ng mga espeyal na mga lugar o kaya, edipisyo kung saan sila ay makapaglibang, makapagpahinga o magpalipas lang ng oras. Maliban sa kanyang karingalan at pambihirang mga tanawin, ito ay ang isang napakahalaga para sa “kayaking” o ang isport na ang gamit ay “kayak” na isang maliit na kasin-tulad ng banka na hindi pinapatakbo ng motor at nagmula pa sa mga “Inuit” ( mga katutubo na nakatira sa mataas na bahagi ng hilaga ng Canada). Ang Lake Superior ay kilala rin para sa “canoeing”, isa ring isport na ang gamit ay “canoe” na kasintulad din ng “kayak” at banka, kaya lang ito ay mas makitid at mas magaan sa bigat. Popular din ang Lawang Superior para sa pag-paparaw, isport na pangingisda at “skiing” sa tubig.  Ang aming mga lawa na malayo sa aplaya at mga ilog ay nagpapakita ng  halimbawa ng bako-baku at paliko-likong tanawin ng Hilagang-Kanlurang Ontario at ito ay nagbibigay ng himpilan para sa maraming iba’t-ibang  kasiglahang-paglilibang tulad ng pangangaso, pangingisda,” snow shoeing”, na ang gamit pag naglalalakad  sa niyebe ay  kaka-ibang sapatos o tsinelas na nagsisilbing protiksiyon para sa paa at pati na rin ng buong katawan, “snowmobiling”, na isang klase na pansasakyan na ginagamit sa paglilibot-libot sa ibang dako sa ibabaw ng mga niyebe, “skiing” at paglalakad-lakad.

Ang ibig sabihin ng Shuniah ay pilak sa Ojibwe, na kinikilalang pinakamalaking kalipunan ng mga katutubo o Mga Naunang Bansa sa hilagang bahagi ng America at Canada. Ang pilak ay isang mamahaling mambato o mineral na malawak na minina sa loob ng buong isandataang taon sa Shuniah.  Karamihan ng  itsura  ng kalupaan nito ay resulta ng mga “glaciers”, na masa na mga niyebe na tumigil sa lupain ng napakahabang panahon at  sinukloban ang rehiyon na ito, labinlimang milyong (15,000.000) taon na ang nakakaraan.  Ang mga latak na iniwan ng mga “glacier” ay tinatawag na “Mackenzie Moraine “, isang pook na mayaman ng mga pinagsamang mga latak. Ang Amethyst ay isang medyo-mamahaling bato na nakikita sa lahat ng dako ng Shuniah at ito ay minimina para pangkalakal at ginagamit sa maraming mga lokal na tindahan at pagawaan ng mga alahas, mga iba’t ibang bagay na gawang-sining at mga pangregalo.

Ang Munisipyo ng Shuniah ay nagbibigay ng mga pagkakataon para kapwa panlipunang pagtitipon at katawang-pangkalakasan para sa kanyang mga mamamayan, na nagtataguyod at nanghihimok ng kagalingan at kabutihan at malakas na ugnayan ng mga magkakapitbahay. Ang masigasig at mataginting na damdamin ng lipunan at ang magandang kapaligiran nito ay nagpapaunlad ng isang ganap at malusog na uri ng buhay. Ipagpapatuloy ng Shuniah ang kanyang pagiging mayaman kapwa sa kanyang pamana at kalinangan: isang tunay na hiyas ng Hilagang Kanlurang Ontario.

LIVING

Shuniah borders on the easterly limits of the City of Thunder Bay and has a full time resident population of 3,000. Full time residents make up about 2/3 of all the property owners in Shuniah and the other 1/3 of property owners are primarily made up of what we refer to as “Camp” owners. Camp or cottage, cabin or lodge, whatever you call it, these recreational properties take advantage of stunning views along the shoreline of Lake Superior and several other inland lakes in Shuniah. Shuniah is home to quaint cottages, stately homes, log cabins as well as rural homesteads.

The Municipal roads are very well maintained on a year-round basis making travel in Shuniah trouble-free. Shuniah is well serviced by Highway 11/17 traversing east/west through the Municipality. There are several arterial highways extending to the northern Wabikimi Wilderness areas, south to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and Silver Islet on the Sibley Peninsula. The Municipality of Shuniah offers residents and visitors a laid back lifestyle far removed from the hustle and bustle of larger urban centres, yet is only minutes away from the City of Thunder Bay and its International airport.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) provide policing services to the Municipality of Shuniah. The Community Officer and the Community Policing Office is located at the McGregor Recreation Centre on Lakeshore Drive. The Community Policing Officer is very involved in community events and education programs for youth.

The Shuniah Volunteer Fire Department includes 3 fire stations and has some of the most advanced and up to date fire fighting equipment. The Department employs approximately 30 volunteers that are on call in the event of a fire or other emergency. Under a mutual aid agreement with the Pass Lake Fire Departmentadditional emergency services are provided to Shuniah residents if the need arises.

Ambulance services are provided to Shuniah through EMS Superior North and are stationed at the Fire Hall on Lakeshore Drive. A Heli-Pad landing area for air ambulance is located just east of the Mackenzie River.
WORKING 

Like other municipalities that are located close to the City of Thunder Bay, a large number of Shuniah residents choose to work in the city. In just a short 15 minutes drive, residents can be downtown in Thunder Bay’s north core or at the busy Intercity, where a large number of businesses are located. At the end of a long work day, residents look forward to the short commute home to be lakeside once again.

LEARNING 

It takes a village to raise a child and the local public school is committed to quality education while protecting the village atmosphere.

McKenzie Public School located on Lakeshore Drive holds classes for those in Junior Kindergarten through to grade 6 with excellent teacher to student ratios, which provides more one to one learning for students.

Bussing to Thunder Bay Sr. Elementary and High Schools - Most bussing for students is provided to the end of the child’s driveway. Claude E. Garton Public School is located at the easterly limit of the City of Thunder Bay and is only a 5 minute drive to the border of Shuniah. Generally, High School students attend the newly built Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute or St Ignatius Roman Catholic School.
DOING BUSINESS 

Municipal leaders in Shuniah are dedicated to working with and promoting new and existing businesses.  We have the lowest housing, commercial and industrial tax rates of any Municipality in this region.  Large undeveloped areas of land in Shuniah present excellent opportunities for entrepreneurs and investors who are interested in starting or expanding their business

Most importantly, the longest highway system in Canada, Hwy 11/17, and the Canadian Pacific Railway cut directly through the middle of Shuniah. The City of Thunder Bay is also home to one of the largest shipping ports in Canada, and the United States border is less than a one hour drive to the south.

Shuniah is a growing and diversified community eager to work with local, national or international business owners to grow and develop commercial endeavours.
PLAYING 

There are two recreational facilities within Shuniah. The MacGregor Recreation Centre on Lakeshore Drive offers a drop in program for Youth in grades 4 and up. There are weekly scheduled events including soccer, skating, youth and teen dances, cooking classes and movie nights. Playgroups, yoga, and senior’s activities are also scheduled throughout the week. The Centre is available to rent so you can hold your own event or get together! A newly refurbished McTavish Recreation area located in the Pearl district boasts a new baseball field, outdoor skating rink and heated change room.

Excellent restaurants and bars, theatres, a symphony orchestra and a full service community auditorium are just minutes away in the City of Thunder Bay, Northwestern Ontario’s major service centre.
