General/Family Practitioners
There are many communities and organizations across Northwestern Ontario searching for General and Family Practitioners. Practice opportunities are available in the public and private sectors at hospitals, medical clinics, health centres, community clinics, long-term care homes and more.
In order to qualify as a Practicing Physician in Ontario interested physicians will need to receive their licences through the Provincial College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). Candidates will follow a Pathway to Licensing to complete the process, typically either the Pathway 3 for US trained physicians, and Pathway 4 for International Medical Graduates (IMG).
Incentives and support services are offered to help recruit and retain quality Practitioners from outside the region such as:
- The Northern and Rural Recruitment and Retention (NRRR) Initiative offers financial incentives to eligible physicians who establish a full-time practice in an eligible community. As an example; the amount of the Thunder Bay grant is $80,000.
- Underserviced Area Program’s (UAP) offers travel reimbursement from within Ontario and accommodations expenses for interested candidates to visit communities on its Lists of Areas Designated as Underserviced for General / Family Practitioners (GP/ FP), Specialists or rehabilitation professionals.
