The wawa family health team

The Wawa Family Health Team is a newly developed interdisciplinary team of Family Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Social Worker and more. Working in a centrally-located, EMR implemented office, we strive to provide patient-centred collaborative primary care.  Best practices and evidence-based theory are utilized in our service delivery to the community of Wawa and the surrounding area. If you have questions about this exciting new team, whether you are a practitioner or patient, call 705-856-1313 to speak with Silvana Dereski, Executive Director.

Faith

For those seeking to study their faith, Wawa offers services from various denominations including:  First United Church, St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Wawa Baptist Church and Cavalry Pentecostal Church. Many of the churches in the area organize fundraising and activity groups within their congregation.

Wawa’s main sources of employment are in the Sales, Public Services, Forestry, Mining and Tourism sectors. The top employers currently include: Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd., the Ministry of Natural Resources, Lady Dunn Health Centre and the Municipality of Wawa. In recent years, Wawa has also become a hub for GIS (Geographic Information System) endeavours in the area thanks to the Northern Information Technology and Geomatics Cooperative (NITGC). The Cooperative provides services to Wawa and the nearby communities of White River, Chapleau, Dubreuilville, Hornepayne and Manitouwadge.  The Wawa Business Directory provides prospective residents with a complete listing of businesses in the area.

Employment Services

The Regional Employment Help Centre has been in operation since 1993 and provides services to the communities of Wawa, Dubreuilville and White River. The office assists unemployed and underemployed individuals and employers in accessing available Employment Ontario programs including wage subsidy applications, skills enhancement training and other employment related services.

Wawa offers quality educational resources for children, youth and adult learners. There are Catholic and public schools from Kindergarten to Grade 12, in both English and French. Nearby in Dubreuilville, residents have access to two French-language schools. École St-Joseph offers a Kindergarten to grade 8. High school students can study at École secondaire l’Orée des Bois.. In addition, there are numerous options for adult learning and early childhood development.

North Algoma Literacy Coalition is an adult educational resource for those seeking to improve basic reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills. Students can also work on their own goals for employment, further education and training or everyday living skills.  Support is also available for those seeking help to improve their English language skills. 

Contact North offers Northern Ontario a link to over 200 courses and 80 part-time and full-time programs offered by 13 Ontario colleges and universities, as well as literacy organizations. Courses are provided through Audio-conference or Video-conference at 2 locations in Wawa.  Levels of education include post-secondary, college and university, with end results varying from high school GED through to Master’s Degrees.  Various certificate programs are accessible periodically, offering instruction directed to upgrading skills or employment requirements.

The Confederation College Wawa Campus offers a wide variety of programs to meet the education and training needs of the Superior East Region.

Business Funding Available!

There are a variety of funding programs for entrepreneurs and businesses who choose to locate in Wawa. This includes the new NOHFC Entrepreneurs Program which will provide up to $125,000 or 50% of new business start-up costs. Other funding available only to Northern Ontario Businesses includes:

• Superior East Communities Future Up to $250,000 in loan financing.

“My fiancé and I relocated to Wawa from Kitchener, Ontario. First Shane moved in 2006, essentially, for a great job in the mining sector and for the ruggedness of the area as we really enjoy camping, fishing, hiking etc. Then I moved the following year after completing some University courses in 2007. At first I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into as I’d never lived in a smaller town before. Now, I not only have a great job and a sense of wonder in regards to the physical beauty that surrounds me, but I really can’t see myself living anywhere else! 

There are so many reasons why we have chosen to stay. The community of Wawa is filled with friendly, helpful, kind-hearted and passionate people. It is very safe community.  It’s also only a two and a half hour drive to a major city but far enough away that you get the sense that you’re surrounded by majestic wilderness that stretches as far as the eye can see. We have purchased a beautiful home here and have decided that this is the perfect place to raise a family.”

“I moved to Wawa in August 2009 after I completed my education at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. My partner is originally from Wawa and introduced me to the town when we first met. I was a little eerie at first when I was making the decision to commute to a small town after being a city girl for all my life. It turns out it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Wawa seems to draw people in; it could be due to all the activities that Wawa has to offer like; fishing, hiking, hunting snowmobiling etc... But I think it’s also due to the fact that the residents here are all incredibly welcoming and helpful when you are familiarizing yourself with the town. Wawa may be small but there is nothing like it.”
