Basic Literacy Skills
Basic literacy, math and language skills will help you to succeed in Northwestern Ontario. If you need assistance to improve your literacy and basic skills, there are supports and resources available to you and your family.
The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities provides a Literacy and Basic Skills Program (LBS). The LBS program is free and confidential. Training is available September through to June, and is offered both during the day and in the evenings. Information about Literacy and Basic Skills Agencies in the Northwestern Ontario region is available at Literacy Northwest or toll free: 1-800-461-9294.
Several organizations in the region also offer Literacy and Basic Skills programs in addition to Academic Upgrading. The purpose of these programs is to help people qualify for employment or postsecondary training. The programs are taught either in a classroom setting or online. In some cases, childcare and transportation allowances may be available.
