Improving your English is one of the best ways to settle into Canadian life. It can also improve your career prospects. If you would like help to learn English, there are several organizations who offer English classes.

THUNDER BAY MULTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION (TBMA)

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada LINC provides free English language classes to Landed Immigrants and Convention Refugees, 18 years of age and older. Full-time, part-time and evening classes are available. Child care and transportation assistance is also provided.

The LINC Home Study Program is available to individuals who cannot attend classes at the LINC School. LINC Home Study let's you learn English at home using your computer or books and CDs.

CONFEDERATION COLLEGE ESL COURSES

Confederation College offers English as a Second Language to international students who have intermediate to advanced English language skills. Courses focus on academic skills (reading, writing and oral communication), as well as how to be a better student (listening skills, lectures, how to take notes, and more.)

The English as a Second Language Program is a full-time program that is divided into three levels. Each level is 16 weeks, divided into 8 week sessions with bi-weekly off-campus activities and weekly conversation groups. Fees apply. Learn more.

LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

Note that English services offered by Lakehead University are designed specifically for international students hoping to enrol at Lakehead University and a few are required for admission.

Academic English Program (AEP): A 13-week program to help you meet the language proficiency requirements for Canadian Universities, Colleges, and High Schools.
Summer Intensive Academic English Program: An 8-week program designed to help you develop your English skills in an academic setting.
Language & Culture Program: A 3-week program offering English language and cultural activities.
Visiting International Student Program (VIP): A program designed for students wanting to take part of their academic program in Canada while improving their English.
Customized English Language Program: An English language program customized to meet your specific needs.

THE LAKEHEAD ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE

The Lakehead Adult Education Centre offers English as a Second Language programs for newcomers to Canada. Classes are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced students whose first language is neither English nor French. Fees may apply.
